New York (VNA) – United Nations(UN) peacekeeping activities should be reformed to adapt to arising securitychallenges, said Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Permanent Representative ofVietnam to the UN.

Nga made the remark on August 29 at the UNSecurity Council’s Open Debate on UN Peacekeeping Operations in New York, whichdrew representatives from more than 70 UN member states and severalinternational organisations.

She stressed the need to specify tasks ofeach mission in accordance with its country’s situation, adding that allpeacekeeping activities must respect sovereignty and not interfere incountries’ internal affairs.

It is also necessary to intensifycoordination among UN agencies, nations sending troops, recipient nations, andregional organisations, she stated.

Vietnam will continue its participation inUN peacekeeping operations and is preparing to deploy the level-II fieldhospital in the UN’s Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan, Nga added.

Participants at the debate suggestedincreasing the efficiency of the missions’ operations to solve root causes forconflicts, and seeking long-term and sustainable solutions for people inconflict zones.

They also proposed measures to improve themissions’ operations, especially in preventing and tackling conflicts andboosting post-conflict reconstruction.-VNA
