The United Nation Children's Fund (UNICEF) will hold the UNICEF ZEROawards at the InterContinental Asian Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City onDecember 5 to raise funds to reduce the preventable deaths of childrento zero.

The event is the first to be held to raise funds to fillthe gap of international aid that has been given to Vietnam in thelast 50 years, according to Lotta Sylwander, a representative of UNICEFVietnam.

Much of that international aid has now been reduced as Vietnam was declared a middle-income country by the UN in 2010.

UNICEF ZERO awards will also raise funds to honour inviduals, organisations and businesses that have contributed to the goal ofreducing the number of preventable child deaths and vulnerable childrento zero.

The funds raised from the event will support childrenthroughout Vietnam , especially in Ho Chi Minh City and theprovinces of Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Ninh Thuan, An Giangand Dong Thap.

It is an initiative of Believe in ZERO, a globalUNICEF campaign launched in Vietnam this year that aims to reduce thenumber of preventable children deaths to zero, the number of exploitedor abused children to zero, the number of children deprived of cleanwater and the number denied access to school to zero.

Sylwandersaid the campaign would be founded on the belief that no child shouldever die from a preventable cause and that all children should grow upin a healthy environment, receive comprehensive education and have abright future.

UNICEF believes that the support of the community, along with today's medical and technological advances, will eventuallylead to zero preventable child deaths in Vietnam.

According tothe latest statistics and surveys, Vietnam has two million childrenwho have suffered permanent physical and brain damage caused bymalnutrition.

In Vietnam, 100 children die every day because ofpreventable causes like diarrhea or pneumonia. Three million childrendo not have access to clean water and one child dies every hour duemainly to drowning or traffic accidents.-VNA
