Vietnam affirms commitment to nuclear non-proliferation efforts
Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang has outlined specific priorities and proposals for cooperation with the UNODA in preparation for the upcoming 11th Review Conference of the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

Vienna (VNA) – Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the United Nations and other international organisations in Vienna, has underscored Vietnam’s commitment to advancing multilateralism, building consensus, and ensuring a balanced approach to the three pillars of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), namely non-proliferation, disarmament, and peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
He made the statement at a meeting with Chief of the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) at Vienna Rebecca Jovin on August 7 to promote cooperation with the agency as Vietnam serves as President-designate of the 11th Review Conference of the NPT (11th NPT RevCon), slated for April–May 2026 in New York.
Outlining specific priorities and proposals for cooperation with the UNODA in preparation for the upcoming conference, the diplomat suggested establishing regular communications channels between the UN agency and the Vietnamese missions in New York, Vienna, and Geneva, providing technical and logistical support for Vietnam’s presidential role, and coordinating with the country to hold specialised workshops and forums related to the implementation of the NPT.
Jovin, for her part, praised Vietnam's active role and contributions at multilateral forums, particularly given the current turbulent international environment. She expressed her confidence that Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN, will fulfil the presidential role and lead the conference to success.
She said the UNODA pledges close cooperation with Vietnam to organise regional consultations and provide maximum support for Viet’s activities when he works in Vienna and throughout his tenure as President of the 11th NPT RevCon.
The two sides agreed on close coordination in the coming time towards the successful organisation of the conference, affirming Vietnam’s active role and sense of responsibility in promoting global peace, security, and sustainable development.
🔯 The NPT, signed in 1968 and coming into force in 1970, has 191 member states at present, with Vietnam joining in 1982. It stands as the most comprehensive international nuclear non-proliferation treaty, with the participation of five recognised nuclear-weapon states which are also permanent members of the UN Security Council – the UK, France, the US, Russia, and China./.
As the two countries share the goal of a nuclear weapon-free world, Ambassador Do Hung Viet proposed the Japanese Government continue working closely with and assisting Vietnam as well as the Conference President during the preparation for and organisation of the 11th NPT RevCon next year.
Vietnam will work collaboratively with all parties to ensure a successful review process that meets international expectations. It will engage in broad consultations with countries, regional groups, and relevant stakeholders to help bridge differences and promote consensus.
Officials of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese cities that scarred by the atomic bombings in 1945, have commended Vietnam for its proactive engagement and significant contributions at many international forums in support of peace and nuclear disarmament initiatives.
The visits reflected the elevated position of Vietnam’s foreign policy in the new era—aimed at not only advancing ties with key regional partners like Egypt and Angola but also delivering a strategic message about Vietnam’s commitment to deepening relations with African nations as a whole.
At their talks and meetings, President Cuong and Angola’s top leaders affirmed that the close brotherhood and traditional friendship are a valuable shared asset and a solid foundation for the two nations to advance into a new phase of development.
The ruling People’s Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) attaches great importance to the friendship, solidarity, and comradeship with the Communist Party of Vietnam, and voiced her Party’s wish to further deepen and expand relations between the two sides for the benefit of the Vietnamese and Angolan people.
Vietnam pledges to do its utmost to build an ASEAN of solidarity, consensus, and unity in diversity, and to foster a fast and sustainable development path for ASEAN, grounded in science, technology, and innovation, said Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh.
