New York (VNA) – Vietnam, as a member of boththe UN and the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF), is willingto support engagements between the two, stated Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy,Permanent Representative of Vietnam to the UN.
Quy made the remark at the UN Security Council’s first openonline debate on the OIF held on September 8.
He took the occasion to laud OIF’s contribution to theoperations of the UN and its Security Council via OIF members’ involvement inthe UN’s peacekeeping missions, conflict prevention, and programmes on women,security, and peace.
Highlighting difficulties and challenges facing OIF membernations like racial and religious conflicts, terrorism, and resources shortage,he suggested the organisation join the UN in advocating multilateralism and thepeaceful settlement of political dispute based on rules, preventing conflicts, workingas intermediary for and promoting political solutions to disputes, and sendforces to UN peacekeeping mission.
At the event, OIF General Secretary Louise Mushikiwabo reiteratedthe importance of multilateral cooperation in maintaining international peaceand security, adding that the OIF has actively worked with its partners,including the UN, in various fields of peacekeeping, crisis prevention andmanagement, French language capacity building and advancement of women’s role.
Bintou Keita, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Africa,welcomed progresses made in the UN-OIF collaboration for international peaceand security, with join programmes carried out in the spheres of conflictprevention, sustainable development, democracy, human rights, and womenempowerment, among others.
Participating members of the council acknowledged the OIF’scontribution, saying room for the organisation to promote its role in the UNremains tremendous.
They called on the two organisations to deepen theircooperation for peace and security internationally./.
