New York (VNA) – The United Nations SecurityCouncil (UNSC) on June 15 held an informal interactive dialogue on thehumanitarian situation in the Tigray region of Ethiopia.
The event drew the attendance of UN Under-Secretary-General for HumanitarianAffairs Mark Lowcock, the World Food Programme Executive Director David Beasley, and Commissionerof the National Disaster Risk Management Commission of Ethiopia Ato MitikuKassa.
Addressing the dialogue, Ambassador Dang Dinh Quy, PermanentRepresentative of Vietnam to the UN, welcomed efforts of the EthiopianGovernment in creating favourable conditions for humanitarian activities of theOffice for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and other partners.
However, Quy held that access to and ensuring ofhumanitarian aids have yet to meet the current demand, especially in southwestand southern Tigray.
According to the UNICEF, 33,000 children are sufferingserious malnutrition in inaccessible regions in Tigray, who face high risk offatality, he noted.
The diplomat underlined that conflict has posed directimpacts on food supply to locals in Ethiopia, resulting in a risk of hunger.
He called on all relevant parties to engage in acomprehensive dialogue with goodwill and constructive spirit, whileimplementing their humanitarian obligations.
The Vietnamese representative underlined the need for international communityand the UNSC to continue supporting the role of neighbouring countries and regionalorganisations, especially the African Union, in seeking final peacefulsolutions to the Tigray conflicts.
Vietnam supports Ethiopian people’s efforts towards peace,stability and development, Quy stated, stressing the significance of the fullrespect to independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ethiopia./.
