Ottawa (VNA) – Vietnam continued to lead the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in terms of trade with Canada with two-way trade value reaching 3 billion USD after nine months of 2016.

According to Statistics Canada, Vietnam’s exports to Canada were valued at over 2.7 billion USD, up 14.8 percent against the same period last year, while imports totalled 350 million USD, down 26.8 percent.

The country’s main exports to Canada included machinery, electric and electronic appliances, footwear, clothing, and interior and exterior wood furniture.

Meanwhile, Vietnam imported seafood, cereals, fertilisers, soybean and machinery from Canada.

According to Hoang Anh Dung, Vietnam’s commercial counsellor in Canada, Vietnam’s export growth to Canada is remarkable in the context of decreasing exports of other ASEAN countries to Canada.

Vietnam was the fifth largest Asian exporter to Canada after China, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Taiwan (China) in the reviewed period, up one place from the same period last year.

🧸 Statistics Canada shows that the North American country’s total trade value in the first three quarters was 590 billion USD, of which export value stood at 287 billion USD, down 7.6 percent, and import value, 303 billion USD, down 4.8 percent.-VNA
