Vietnam gains experience in building anti-corruption agencies

To ensure the independenceand close coordination of anti-corruption agencies, as well as theirresponsibility and authority appropriately, a comprehensive and stablelegal framework needs to be established.

TheVietnamese Party and State considers anti-corruption efforts an urgentand long-term objective, which must be pursued persistently andeffectively, Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission forInternal Affairs Nguyen Doan Khanh remarked during a conference inHanoi on August 28.

In the foreseeable future,Vietnam should continue the efforts of the Central Steering Committee onAnti-Corruption, while thoroughly studying internationalaccomplishments, such as measures adopted by Singapore and thePhilippines.

The country also needs to amend itslegal documents, detailing the functions and responsibilities ofrelevant agencies, experts said.

In 2013, Vietnamtook legal action in 233 cases of corruption involving 568 individuals,up by 11 cases and 97 individuals compared to 2012. This year saw afurther increase, with 335 cases involving 803 defendants being broughtto court so far.-VNA
