Vietnam and the Philippines will work together in carrying outaquaculture cooperation projects, providing assistance for fishermen onsea and conducting search and rescue activities under a bilateralfishery cooperation agreement.
The agreement was signed inHanoi on June 28 by Deputy Minister of Vietnam Agriculture and RuralDevelopment Vu Van Tam and Undersecretary of the Philippines ForeignAffairs Rafael E. Seguis.
The two ASEAN member countries have setup ties in almost areas of cooperation, including agriculture, DeputyMinister Tam said, adding that the Philippines is among Vietnam’s stablerice importers.
The two countries share similarities inaquaculture development. The Philippines has experiences incommunity-based fishery management and successful researches on seaweedaquaculture and processing, according to Tam.
However, Tam said,in this cooperation, the two countries only share information andexperience in management within the multilateral frameworks throughorganisations in the region like ASEAN and SEAFDEC.
Addressingthe signing ceremony, Undersecretary Rafael E. Seguis stressed thenecessity of bilateral cooperation in the fishery sector, particularlyin information sharing, development of aquaculture and fight againstillegal fishing.
Deputy Minister Tam said the signing of theagreement manifested the two sides’ desire and determination tostrengthen cooperation for benefit of both countries’ fishermen./.
