Vietnam pledges to join UNESCO efforts

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chairman of the StateCommission on Overseas Vietnamese, Nguyen Thanh Son, made this statementduring his meeting with UNESCO General Director Irina Bokova on Feb. 29in Paris , on the occasion of his visit to France .

The meeting was within the UNESCO Executive Board’s annual session from Feb. 27 to Mar. 10.

Speaking at the function, Son thanked Irina Bokova for her finesentiments toward the nation and people of Vietnam . He highlightedthe results of Vietnam-UNESCO practical cooperation. The fact that manycultural, natural, intangible heritages and biosphere reserves ofVietnam have been granted world heritage status has made a significantcontribution to the country’s socio-economic development.

Deputy Minister Son affirmed that Vietnam is ready to host theAsia-Pacific Regional Consultative Meeting of National Commissions forUNESCO in June, at the same time of the 35 th anniversary of thefounding of Vietnam ’s National Commission for UNESCO and the worldheritage recognition ceremony of Ho citadel in Thanh Hoa province.

Son also expressed Vietnam ’s favour towards a plan of action proposed by Bokova.

On the occasion, Son put forward Vietnam ’s proposal ofrecognising the Hung Kings death anniversary as a world intangibleheritage.

For her part, Irina Bokova recalled herunforgettable memories during her Vietnam visit on the occasion thecountry celebrated 1,000 years of Thang Long-Hanoi.

She spoke highly of Vietnam ’s spirit of sharing and cooperation withUNESCO in difficult periods, saying that UNESCO considers Vietnam ’shosting of the Asia-Pacific Regional Consultative Meeting of NationalCommissions for UNESCO as a practical and meaningful way of sharingdifficulties.

Bokova said she plans to visit Vietnam in June.-VNA
