Vietnam up three spots in global innovation index

Vietnam has jumped three spots to the 42nd position out of 129 world economies in the Global Innovation Index (GII) as announced by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in New Delhi, India on July 24.

New Delhi (VNA) – Vietnam has jumped three spots tothe 42nd position out of 129 world economies in the Global Innovation Index(GII) as announced by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) inNew Delhi, India on July 24.

It is the highest ranking that Vietnam has ever achieved sofar.

Meanwhile, Switzerland, the US, UK, Finland and theNetherlands remain in the top.

Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Science andTechnology Pham Cong Tac said Vietnam’s science-technology and innovationsector has made direct and indirect contributions to national economic growthover the past years, especially in fields of health care, agriculture andindustries.

In order to maintain growth momentum, Vietnam is shifting togrowth model based on science-technology and innovation, he said.

According to Tac, the Vietnamese government has assignedministries and localities to take measures to improve the country’s rankings inthe GII.

Sacha Wunsch Vincent, head of the WIPO’s Composite Indicator Research Section,Economics and Statistics Division and Co-Editor of the GII, hailed Vietnam as amodel country among those surveyed by the WIPO over the past three years.

GII’s 80 indicatorsprovide a comprehensive overview of innovation landscape, including politicalenvironment, education, infrastructure, and business development.

Last year,Vietnam ranked 45th out of 126 countries and economies, up two places from2017.-VNA
