Vietnam, US universities enhance cooperation

The Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City and the University of California Los Angeles inked an MoU on December 16 (local time), towards promoting scientific research cooperation.

Washington DC (VNA) – The Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City (VNUHCM) and the University of CaliforniaLos Angeles (UCLA) inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in Washington DC on December 16 (local time), towards promotingscientific research cooperation.

The signing of the MoU took place in the framework of a working visit to the USby a delegation of HCM City officials led by Secretary of the municipal PartyCommittee Nguyen Thien Nhan.

Under the agreement, the two universitieswill enhance exchange of lecturers, scholars and managers in the fields of educationand scientific research.

They will also work together on developing joint research programmes related tobiomedical science and stem cell and seeking research funding from their Governmentsand private resources.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Director of the VNUHCM Huynh Thanh Dat stressedVNUHCM’s commitment to long-term collaboration with UCLA, expressing his hope thatthis will contribute to Vietnam’s education reform.

For his part, Professor Gene Block, Director of the UCLA said hebelieves the MoU will help promote more effective collaboration, especially inthe fields of their common concern.

Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh City Party Committee Nguyen Thien Nhan expressedhis hope for effective cooperation and support between the two universities inthe mentioned fields.

He suggested the two sides consider partnership in researching the applicationof artificial intelligence (robot) in remote diagnosis of serious diseases,especially cancer.

The same day, Nhan and the HCN City delegation had a working session withrepresentatives from McCain Institute under the Arizona State University (ASU),during which they agreed on a cooperation programme to help Ho Chi Minh Citysolve its traffic problems.-VNA
