Vietnamese, Lao localities foster cooperation in border management

The central province of Quang Tri and two bordering Lao provinces - Savanakhet and Salavan - have signed an agreement on cooperation in border affairs and border marker planting for 2017-2018.

Quang Tri(VNA) –The central province of Quang Tri and two bordering Lao provinces -Savanakhet and Salavan - have signed an agreement on cooperation in borderaffairs and border marker planting for 2017-2018.

The agreement wasreached during talks among leaders of the three provinces’ Steering Committeesfor Marker Planting in Gio Linh district of Quang Tri on July 14.

The three localitiesconcurred to efficiently implement the protocol on borderline and bordermarkers and the agreement on land border and land border gate managementregulations signed by the two Governments.

They will alsocontinue with communication activities to raise public awareness of the significanceof the Vietnam-Laos border, the border markers along the three provinces, andthe responsibility to adhere to relevant agreements.

The localities willshare experience and information, while expanding twin relations among villagesof the three provinces, and coordinating closely in enforcing the agreement onthe settlement of free migration and unregistered marriage along the border.

The three provincesalso agreed on some matters related to border trade development, and thestrengthening of cooperation in boosting high technology agricultureproduction, forest planting and construction of wood processing factories forexport.

Quang Tri shares morethan 179 km of border with Savannakhet and Salavan. Over the past years, thethree provinces have engaged in close cooperation on managing and protectingthe borderline, border markers and maintaining stability in the shared border.

However, the threeprovinces are encountering some problems, including illegal cross-bordermovements, rosomg trans-national crimes such as smuggling, human trafficking andillegal drug trade along with the illegal aquatic exploitation in rivers alongthe border.

The sides have stressedthe need for more effective management measures to effectively deal with theproblems.-VNA
