Vietnamese, Russian legislators discuss cooperation measures

Seoul (VNA) – Vietnam wants to continueintensifying cooperation with Russia in defence-security, said NationalAssembly (NA) Vice Chairman Uong Chu Luu.

Luu met with Deputy Speaker of Russia’sState Duma Olga Yepifanova in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, on the sidelines ofthe second Meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries’ Parliaments.

He confirmed that Vietnam prioritisesstrengthening its comprehensive strategic partnership with Russia, and valuesthe role of the country in Asia-Pacific.

The official hailed the significance ofRussia’s efforts to maintain peace and stability in the region, including theEast Sea.

Vietnam is willing to boost cooperation betweenRussia and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), while hopingthat Russia continues backing ASEAN and Vietnam’s stance in settling disputesin the East Sea by peaceful means on the basis of international law, especiallythe 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), in strictlyimplementing the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea andforming a Code of Conduct in the East Sea.

Vietnam also wants Russia to contribute tomaintaining peace, stability and aviation and maritime security and safety inthe East Sea, for the common interests of the Asia-Pacific region, he added.

He expressed his hope that the two sideswill expand oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the continental shelfand the waters of Vietnam in accordance with international law and the UNCLOS.

Olga Yepifanova affirmed that Russia’slegislative body is willing to collaborate with the Vietnamese NationalAssembly.

She emphasised the importance of expandingbilateral trade and economic cooperation and promoting the role of thelegislature in supervising the two countries’ agreements.

She said the two countries’ lawmakers playan important role in narrowing their development gap.

She expressed hope that Vietnam and Russiawill intensify cooperation in researching nuclear energy for peaceful purpose.-VNA
