Vietnam’s SDGs fulfillment to be presented at UN high-level forum

– Deputy Minister of Planning andInvestment Nguyen The Phuong will present a report on Vietnam’s progress inrealising sustainable development goals (SDGs) at the United Nations High-LevelPolitical Forum on Sustainable Development that opened in New York on July 9.

The world has made progress in achieving poverty eliminationworldwide, but it requires the utmost effort to reap set targets by 2030, asheard at the event.

In his opening speech to the event, UN Under SecretaryGeneral for Economic and Social Affairs Liu Zhenmin said countries have 12years left to realise the sustainable development agenda.

Three years have passed by since 193 member states adopted theagenda, many people have enjoyed a better life compared to a decade ago.

The rate of poor households was brought down to 9 percent in2017 from 27 percent in 2000. However, drought and natural disasters caused by climatechange, and escalating conflict in several areas are hampering povertyelimination effort.

The 10-day event attracts over 1,000 leaders of governments,companies and civil organisations who will discuss the process of realising SDGs.

Representatives from 47 countries will share experience,including success stories, challenges and lessons in the process.

President of the UN Economic and Social Council MarieChatardova expressed hope that a joint statement at the end of the forum willconvey a strong political message about international community’s efforts to realisethe sustainable development agenda by 2030.-VNA
