Vietnam’s sustainable revolution in poverty reduction

Vietnam has made significant achievements over the past nearly 40 years of Doi Moi (Reform), with poverty reduction being a key and consistent policy of the Party and State.
Vietnam is the first Asian country to implement a comprehensive, inclusive, and sustainable multidimensional poverty reduction programme. This approach has garnered international recognition as a “revolution,” driving significant change, even in remote areas. The 2015 introduction of the multidimensional poverty index (MPI) marked a shift from income-based measurements to a more holistic model, evaluating access to basic social services like health, education, housing, and clean water.
Vietnam's adoption of the MPI has positioned it as a leader in the Asia-Pacific in tackling poverty from multiple angles. The country aims to reduce the multidimensional poverty rate by 1-1.5% annually during the 2021-2025 period, with a stronger focus on ethnic minorities. Once among the world’s poorest nations, Vietnam has become a poverty reduction success story, lifting millions out of poverty and earning international praise./.
