VNA leader stresses importance of disinformation fight
News agencies bear the responsibility of leading and orienting the public in the fight against disinformation, General Director of the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) Vu Viet Trang told the second discussion session of the 51st Meeting of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) Executive Board held in Istanbul on October 23.

Istanbul (VNA) - News agencies bear the responsibility of leadingand orienting the public in the fight against disinformation, General Directorof the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) Vu Viet Trang told the second discussion sessionof the 51st Meeting of the Organisation of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA)Executive Board held in Istanbul on October 23.
Trang stressed that the emergence of fake news and itsimpact on all areas of life and its rapid spread in cyberspace require newsagencies to play an effective role in providing accurate and fast information withwidespread coverage.
Mainstream information must dominate cyberspace, and"fake news" must be labelled to signal to the public about thedangers of accessing disinformation, she said.
Trang also briefed participants on the results of the efforts by Vietnamese authorities in preventingand combating fake news, as well as related projectsimplemented by the VNA.
As the largest regional press organisation with more than 40member news agencies which account for two-thirds of the world's information,OANA, established in 1961, has shown its responsibility in the field of communicationtowards building modern society, and creating peace and understanding among nations.
The 51st meeting, comprising two discussionsessions, attracted the participation of 29 delegates from 14 member newsagencies of the Executive Board. They exchanged views on cooperation among newsagencies in fighting disinformation, and their role in the age of fake news.
They agreed to hold the 52nd meeting in Japan,and the 53rd in Russia.
The OANA Executive Board also adopted the IstanbulDeclaration which emphasises the mission of news agencies in fighting fake newsby providing the public with balanced and comprehensive information, promotescooperation among news agencies on the regional and national scales, raisespublic awareness about recognising fake news, and the importance of criticalthinking and fact-checking.

On the same day, VNA General Director Trang and SerdarKaragoz, Chairman of the Board, Director General of Turkey’s Anadolu Agency(AA), signed an agreement on professional cooperation to replace the 2016 one.
Along with exchanging information in various forms, the twoagencies will strengthen promotion of socio-economic and cultural developmentof each country and collaborate in important events held in Vietnam or Turkey./.

In recent decades, Vietnam’s mainstream media has become a reliable and persuasive channel for showcasing the nation’s development policies and achievements, especially in economic matters, according to a senior assistant editor at the Times of India.
A hub for sharing best practices, the event aims to forge solutions for financial sustainability, public media contracts, audience engagement, content innovation, and newsroom restructuring. It is also a moment for Vietnam’s media to accelerate its progress and figure out what the “revolutionary press” means in a new era.
From “Thanh nien”, Vietnam’s first revolutionary newspaper founded by Nguyen Ai Quoc (later President Ho Chi Minh) on June 21, 1925, the revolutionary press has remained devoted to its sacred missions -accompanying the nation, serving the Fatherland, and working for the people.
