Da Nang (VNA) – A ceremony washeld in Thanh Khe district of the central city of Da Nang, on February 20 toreceive the certificate recognising the district’s Cau Ngu (whale worship)festival on the national list of intangible cultural heritage.
The festival in Thanh Khe district is oneof the traditional whale-worshipping celebrations of fishing communities incoastal localities.

The whale worship festival is part of thecultural identity of Vietnam’s central and southern coastal localities, whichhas been preserved and passed down through the generations. Participants prayfor plenteous hauls of fish, safe voyages, and peace for the nation.
The festival has been an indispensable partof life in fishing villages and is an important spiritual and cultural event,staged in the hope of winning favour with the sea god.

Speaking at the ceremony, Director of themunicipal Department of Culture and Sports Huynh Van Hung said the festival isdesigned to honour those who contribute to the country’s fisheries sector, aswell as preserve traditional folk culture.–VNA
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has recognised the “Cau Ngu” (whale worship) festival in the central coastal province of Phu Yen as national intangible cultural heritage.
More than 4,000 people took part in the annual Nghinh Ong (Whale Worship) Festival that fishermen in the Mekong province of Bac Lieu honour the giant marine mammals.
For the first time, the World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) has granted Vietnam hosting rights for the two championships, including the Asian women’s solo category, which debuts this year as an officially recognised event.
Eight teams will join the tournament, divided into two groups. Group A features Vietnam, the Philippines, Sichuan Club (China), and Australia, while Group B consists of Vietnam U21, Korabelka Club (Russia), Taiwan (China), and U21 Thailand.
Despite strong home support and high expectations, Vietnam were unable to overcome the defending champions, who secured their third consecutive win over Vietnam in a regional final, following previous victories in 2014 and 2023.
The event, part of Vietnam’s cultural diplomacy strategy through 2030, was jointly organised by the Vietnamese Embassy in Venezuela and USM’s Faculty of International Relations. It attracted thousands of students from universities across Venezuela.
For the first time, Vietnamese audiences will have the opportunity to experience the ballet masterpiece "Don Quixote" in its original version by renowned choreographer Marius Petipa.

The U23 competition will run from June 16 to 22, followed by the U17 event from June 23 to 28, while athletes competing in the U23 category will undergo weight and skill checks ahead of the matches starting June 18, while similar checks for U17 athletes will take place before June 23.
