Winners of Alexandre Yersin Award honoured

The Swiss - Vietnamese Medical Association (HELVIETMED) on July 26 presented the prestigious Alexandre Yersin Award to the four best medicine research works of Vietnamese scientists.

HCM City (VNA) - The Swiss -Vietnamese Medical Association (HELVIETMED) on July 26 presented theprestigious Alexandre Yersin Award tothe four best medicine research works of Vietnamese scientists.

The award aims to honour outstanding medicinepublications by Vietnamese scientists for their international medicineresearch.

Theaward was given to "In Vitro Fertilization: Transfer of fresh embryos andfrozen embryos is equally effective" by Dr. Vuong Ngoc Lan and colleaguesfrom Ho Chi Minh City Medicine and Pharmacy University; "Building themodel of fatality prognosis in emergency patients" by Dr. Ha Tan Duc fromCan Tho  Central General Hospital; "Effects of lean mass andfat mass to osteoporosis" by Dr. Ho Pham Thuc Lan and colleagues from TonDuc Thang University in HCM City; and “Optimisation of Polymerase chain reaction (PRC) method forsepticemia diagnosis” by Dr. Ngo Tat Trung and colleagues from the MilitaryCentral Hospital 108 in Hanoi.

Thewinning studies were selected from more than 80 entries, which were appraisedby professors and doctors from Switzerland, France and Australia, based on scientificquality, clinical and scientific influence, innovation and the prestige of thescientific magazines the work was published in. 

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Othmar Hardegger, SwissConsul General in HCM City, highlighted the significance of the award namedafter the Swiss-born physician and bacteriologist who made great contributions to Vietnam’sand the world’s medicine.

Alexandre Yersin is a symbol of the cooperation and friendshipbetween Vietnam and Switzerland over the last 47 years, he said.

He expressed his hope the award is not just an honour for current Vietnamesescientists but also drives others in the future.

The prize is named in honor of Dr. Alexandre Yersin(1863 – 1943) who was a pioneer in medical research in Vietnam and discoveredthe bubonic plague bacillus and Yersinia pestis. His research helped eliminatethe epidemic disease that killed millions of people over the century.

Yersin wasthe founder and first head of Indochina Medical College, which is known as HanoiMedical University today.-VNA
