Women patients receive free eye treatment

The Vietnam National Institute of Ophthalmology (VNIO) has provided free eye checks-up and medicine to 150 patients, mostly women, in response to the World Sight Day (WSD) 2009’s theme of gender equality in eye care.

Theactivity was part of a programme held by the Vietnam OphthalmologyAssociation in association with the VNIO and the Vietnam Red CrossSociety (VRC) under the sponsorship of ORBIS organisation.

The VRC’s voluntary doctor team will also provide free eye treatment to 150 old people in the city on this occasion.

Additionally, 100 poor cataract patients in northern Bac Ninh province will receive free surgery on Sept. 28.

WSD is held annually on the second Thursday of October to draw thecommunity’s attention to the global eye issue. The WSD 2009 has thetheme “Gender and eye health - equal access to care” as nearlytwo-thirds of blind people worldwide are women and girls but they havepoor access to eye care compared to men./.
