Workshop looks to develop human resources amongst ethnic minorities

A workshop was held in Buon Ma Thuot city, the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, on July 19 to look into the locality of human resources of ethnic minority groups in Vietnam.

Dak Lak (VNA) – A workshop was held in Buon Ma Thuotcity, the Central Highlands province of Dak Lak, on July 19 to look into thelocality of human resources of ethnic minority groups in Vietnam.

The event – jointly held by the NationalAssembly’s Ethnic Council, the Government’s Committee on Ethnic MinorityAffairs, and the Irish Embassy in Vietnam – aimed to seek out ways to develop humanresources amongst ethnic minority communities, thereby helping to reducepoverty in a sustainable manner and boost comprehensive development in thecommunities.

Among the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam, 53 areminorities with over 13 million people, accounting for 14.6 percent of thecountry’s population. There are ethnic communities in 56 of the 63 provincesand cities nationwide.

While 48.6 percent of ethnic minority peoplereside in the northern midland and mountainous areas, about 30 percent also livein northern central, coastal central, and Central Highlands regions.

Participants in the workshop reviewed thesituation of minorities’ human resources in terms of their living standards,income, employment opportunities, educational level, occupational skills, engagementin the political system, health and longevity, and marital status.

They also pointed out some of the shortcomings inhuman resources of ethnic minorities, especially those in border and remoteareas, and evaluated existing policies on human resource development in thosecommunities.

The National Assembly and Government is soon to completeits legal framework relating to ethnic minority groups and those in rural, mountainousareas. 

They also need to build a master plan for thesocio-economic development of ethnic minorities and mountainous areas for2021-2025, and press ahead with implementing current policies on ethnicminority human resources, including the prioritisation of educational resourcesand vocational training facilities in ethnic and disadvantaged areas,participants noted. -VNA
