World Bank helps Vietnam develop logistics system

The World Bank and Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport have launched the Vietnam Logistics Statistical System Project.

Hanoi (VNA) - The World Bank andVietnam’s Ministry of Transport have launched the Vietnam Logistics StatisticalSystem Project.

Designed to establish a national system forcollecting, processing and publishing transport and trade logistics statistics annually,the project is part of the World Bank’s support to the Vietnamese Government’sintegrated programme for trade facilitation and logistics development.

“Developing a robust logistics data systemis crucial for designing and implementing effective policies to enhanceVietnam’s logistics performance and competitiveness,” said Sebastian Eckardt,Lead Economist for the World Bank in Vietnam.

Financed by the multi-donor Trust Fund forStatistical Capacity Building and managed by the World Bank, the project alsoprovides support for project implementation, through a partnership between theWorld Bank, the International Transport Forum, the Organisation for EconomicCooperation and Development and the Australia-World Bank Partnership Programme. 

In 2016, Vietnam ranked 64th out of 160countries in the World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index and fourth in ASEANafter Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia.

Vietnamese firms mainly provide domesticlogistics services such as transport service, airport, seaport and warehouseservices and cargo loading and unloading services.

Few firms provide international logisticsservices through acting as agents for foreign enterprises.-VNA
