Vietnamese youth shared ideas for initiatives and practical activities to promote gender equality and eliminate discrimination against women at a programme in Hanoi on October 20 for Vietnamese Women’s Day. Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCMCYU) Central Committee and President of the Vietnam Youth Federation Nguyen Phi Long said that equality for women and girls was not merely an aspiration, but a responsibility belonging to all people.
He urged everyone to help build a future where all men, women, boys and girls can develop completely and devote themselves to creating a sustainable, equal society. Shoko Ishikawa, the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women)’s representative in Vietnam, said gender equality could not be attained without effort from men.
Organised by UN Women, the HCMCYU Central Committee and the Vietnam Volunteer Information Resource Centre (VVIRC), the programme Promoting Gender Equality in Vietnam aimed to promote the importance of gender equality and the essential role men should play in eliminating discrimination against women and girls. The programme was also part of the HeForShe movement, which was launched in Vietnam in March for International Women’s Day (March 8). At the event, UN Women and VVIRC announced the winners of a photo and video competition, For Women Around Us, and the official song of the Vietnam HeForShe movement.-VNA
