The second consultation conference for the Mekong Delta Plan (MDP) was held in My Tho city, Tien Giang province, on December 5 with the participation of 160 delegates.

The conference,jointly held by Steering Committee of the Southwestern Region, thePeople’s Committee of Tien Giang and relevant ministries, was part ofthe 2012 Mekong Delta Economic Cooperation (MDEC) forum – Tien Giang.

Establishing the MDP was a key motion outlined in thestrategic partnership agreement between Vietnam and the Netherlandson climate change adaptation and water management.

The Mekong Delta is an area with advantages in land, labour and waterresources that can serve sustainable growth. With strong agriculturaldevelopment, people in the area have seen rising standards of living,and now agricultural products from the region are available for bothdomestic consumption and export.

However, the deltais also an area that suffers from the impact of climate change.Solutions are required to deal with these challenges in the future.

The MDP was set up to build and maintain a prosperousMekong Delta, targeting socio-economic development, a strong and dynamiceconomy, and climate change adaptation.

🎃 Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

𓆉 Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
