AFF Women’s Championship: Vietnam meet Thailand at semi-finals

The Vietnamese women’s football team will play Thailand at the semi-finals of the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) Women’s Championship after beating the Philippines 4-0 on May 6 to top Group B.

TheVietnamese team’s third consecutive victory confirmed its top positionin Group B with 9 points. After beating Malaysia 4-0, Myanmar earned 6points and received the second Group B ticket to the semi-final. The semi-finals, taking place on June 8, will also see rivalries between U20 Australia and Myanmar.
The match between Vietnam and Thailand is considered a “predestinedbattle”; one year ago Thailand trounced Vietnam in a playoff heading tothe 2015 World Cup.
The 2015 AFF Women’s FootballChampionship kicked off in Ho Chi Minh City’s Thong Nhat Stadium on May1. This year’s tournament is the annual highlight for these teams, sincewomen’s football is not included in competition categories at the 28thSoutheast Asian Games (SEA Games 28) to be held in Singapore this June. Vietnam has hosted the VFF Women’s FootballChampionship three times (in 2006, 2008, and 2012) since it was firstheld in 2006, bringing home the gold in 2006 and 2012./.
