Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- The Vietnamese Ministry of Defence hosted a solemn ceremony in Chile’s capital city of Santiago on the evening of November 11 (local time) to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam People’s Army (VPA) and the 35th anniversary of the All-People’s National Defence Day (December 22, 1989-2024).

– Vice State President Vo Thi Anh Xuan held talks with Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson on November 11, as part of her on-going official visit to the West European country, during which the two sides agreed to further deepen bilateral relations in the time to come.

- The information and communications sector currently generates annual revenue of 150 billion USD, which accounts for one-third of the country's GDP, and its growth always doubles the GDP's rate, Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Manh Hung told a Q&A session, as part of the National Assembly’s ongoing 8th sitting on November 12.

This is a sector driven by several strategic technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), big data, cloud computing, quantum computing, artificial intelligence, blockchain, virtual reality, and cybersecurity, Hung said, adding that these emerging digital technologies are developing rapidly, forming a basic production force, and contributing to the creation of a new digital space. - The 7th Hanoi International Film Festival (HANIFF) wrapped up on November 11 with the Best Feature Film Prize going to “Hard Shell”, a film from Iran.

The movie won as "Best Feature-Length Film" and the award for both Best Director and the Best Actor. The piece, written and directed by Majid-Reza Mostafavi, tells of a teenager who falls in love with a performer who used to be a tightrope walker in the circus but she’s banned due to an order made by the authorities. Her father, is a foreman of a donkey farm, who finds out the donkeys are missing and then he uncovers terrible secrets of corruption. Read full story

– The Party Central Committee’s Secretariat held a meeting on November 12 to consider disciplinary measures on Nguyen Viet Hien, an official from the northern province of Thai Binh for his wrongdoings.

After studying a report from the Party Central Committee’s Inspection Commission, the Secretariat concluded that Hien, when serving as a member of the Party Committee of Thai Binh and Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the Thai Binh Department of Education and Training, and head of the Steering Committee for the high-school entrance examination of Thai Binh in the 2024-2025 academic year, must bear responsibilities as a leader for violations and shortcomings of the Party Committee of the Department of Education and Training of Thai Binh and the department itself. – Military sappers in the northern province of Hung Yen on November 12 safely moved and detonated a war-time bomb weighing more than 100kg, which was uncovered in Kim Dong district on November 9.

The bomb, about 20cm in diameter and 85cm in length, was discovered by the locals in Duong Phu hamlet, Chinh Nghia commune, Kim Dong district, when digging a drainage ditch. Read full story

- The Ho Chi Minh City Union of Friendship Organisations (HUFO) held a get-together on November 12 to mark the 1st anniversary of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership (September 10, 2023 - 2024).

Addressing the event, Vice Chairman of the municipal People’s Council and Chairman of the Vietnam – US Friendship Association (VUFA) in HCM City Pham Thanh Kien said that the progress in people-to-people diplomacy between the two nations is a result of the efforts to foster and elevate the bilateral relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, toward the celebration of the 30-year diplomatic relations in 2025./.
