Hanoi (VNA) - The following is a brief review of the day’s events as reported by the Vietnam News Agency.

- Super Typhoon Yagi is currently about 620km southeast of the northeastern coastal province of Quang Ninh and will make a landfall on September 7, said the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

The storm, the third to enter the East Sea this year, is sustaining maximum wind speeds of Level 16 (184 - 201km per hour) near its eye, with gusts of over Level 17. It is moving westerly at a speed of about 20km per hour. Read full story

- President of Guinea-Bissau Umaro Sissoco Embalo visited the Field Crops Research Institute (FCRI) under the Vietnam Academy of Agricultural Sciences (VAAS) in Lien Hong commune of Hai Duong city, the northern province of Hai Duong, on September 6.

VAAS Deputy Director Dao The Anh said the academy has taken part in many programmes to help guarantee food security in Africa. In Guinea-Bissau alone, it is carrying out a project on cashew farming, and it hopes for continued support from the country so that the project is successful. Read full story

- A press briefing on the 2024 Vietnamese Language Appreciation Day and a gala to honour the language was held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' State Committee for Overseas Vietnamese (SCOV) in Hanoi on September 6.

Nguyen Manh Dong, Deputy Chairman of the SCOV, highlighted success of this year’s celebration, which included a variety of activities both at home and abroad which have made significant strides in promoting and preserving Vietnamese among overseas Vietnamese communities. Read full story

- Vietnam recorded a trade surplus of 19.07 billion USD in the first eight months of this year, the General Statistics Office (GSO) announced on September 6.

In the reviewed period, the country’s trade turnover reached over 511 billion USD, up 16.7% over the same period last year, with exports totalling 265 billion USD and imports 246 billion USD, up 15.8% and 17.7% year-on-year, respectively. Read full story

- About 14.15 billion USD worth of foreign direct investment (FDI) was disbursed in the first eight months of this year, up 8% year-on-year, marking the highest for an eight-month period over the past five years, according to the Foreign Investment Agency under the Ministry of Planning and Investment.

During the reviewed period, Vietnam saw a total of 20.52 billion USD in registered FDI capital, an increase of 7% against the same period last year. Read full story

- Vietnam is one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia with promising potential and favourable macroeconomic factors such as a young population, skilled labour force, and abundant natural resources, according to Deputy Chairman & CEO of Singapore-based United Overseas Bank (UOB) Wee Ee Cheong.

Addressing the bank’s annual “Gateway to ASEAN” conference, held in Ho Chi Minh City on September 6, the official said that Vietnam has benefited from the global supply chain shift and free trade agreements, leading to a significant increase in foreign direct investment (FDI), reaching record levels recently. - Vietnam welcomed 1.43 million international visitors in August, marking a 17.7% increase year-on-year, according to the latest report from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam.

Over the first eight months of 2024, the country received a total of more than 11.4 million foreign tourists -- a 45.8% rise from the previous year and a one% increase compared to the same period in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic. Read full story

- All four Vietnamese students who participated in the 36th International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI 2024) have won prizes, bringing home two golds, one silver and one bronze, the Ministry of Education and Training announced on September 6.

All the students are from the High School for the Gifted of the Hanoi University of Science (HUS) under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The gold medals were awarded to Pham Cong Minh and Hoang Xuan Bach. Nguyen Huu Tuan claimed a silver while Pham Ngoc Trung took a bronze. Read full story./.
