Anniversary of Hai Ba Trung Uprising marked in Hanoi

A ceremony was held at the Hai Ba Trung Temple in Hanoi on March 11 (the sixth day of the second lunar month) to mark the 1,979th anniversary of the Hai Ba Trung Uprising.

Hanoi (VNA) – A ceremony was held at the Hai Ba Trung Temple in Hanoi on March11 (the sixth day of the second lunar month) to mark the 1,979th anniversary of the Hai Ba Trung Uprising.

Hoang Trung Hai, Secretary of the municipal Party Committee, other delegatesand many local people offered incense to the Trung Sisters.

A leader of Hai Ba Trung district recalled the uprising and detailed thedistrict’s socio-economic development.

Following rituals, festivalgoers enjoyed traditional art performances andparticipated in cultural activities and folk games.  

On the sixth day of the second lunar month in 40AD, the Trung Sisters led a mass uprising against the Han invaders to reclaimnational independence after more than 200 years of foreign rule. 

After defeating the invaders, Trung Trac becameKing. Three years later, the Han army returned and defeated the Trung sistersand their army, after which the sisters killed themselves by jumping into theHat Giang river. 

The uprising has gone down in Vietnamese historyas a demonstration of the nation's strength and patriotism, as well as thecrucial role of Vietnamese women in national defence.-VNA
