Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Minister of National Defence Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh onFebruary 13 handed over the President’s decision to another officer to take onduty at the United Nations peacekeeping mission in South Sudan.

Lieut. Colonel Nguyen Kim Tinh, from the Vietnam Department of PeacekeepingOperations, was assigned to replace Major Do Thi Hang Nga,who has returned home after finishing her one-year working term as a commandingofficer in South Sudan.

Speaking at the ceremony, Director of the VietnamDepartment of Peacekeeping Operations Colonel Hoang Kim Phung said theagency has been active in preparing to dispatch its staff to UN peacekeeping missions.

Lieut. Col. Tinh expressed his honour to be directlyinvolved in UN peacekeeping activities.

Tinh pledged to do well in his duty for the term, contributing to implementing Vietnam’splan on joining in UN peacekeeping operations during the 2015-2020 period.

In his speech, Deputy Minister of National DefenceSen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh praised Major Do Thi Hang Nga for her contributionsduring her term in South Sudan, asking her to continue adding to consultancyefforts in the field of UN peacekeeping, especially in the preparation of femaleofficers for the work in the time ahead.

He also asked Lt. Col. Tinh to learn from theexperience of his comrades in order to perform well in his upcoming duty.

Vinh said Vietnam is making necessarypreparations for the second level-2 field hospital and the engineer corp, readyingthem for UN peacekeeping missions. 

In October 2018, Vietnam’sfirst level-2 field hospital, the first-ever independent unit of Vietnam tojoin the UN peacekeeping mission, deployed two groups of 63 personnel to SouthSudan. The first group with 32 members set off on October 1 and the secondgroup with 31 doctors left for the African country on October 15.

In June 2018, the UN recognised the VietnamDepartment of Peacekeeping Operations as one of four international trainingcentres in the region and agreed to carry out training under the three-partypartnership (comprised of Vietnam, the UN, and a partner country). 

The selection of Vietnam as a training venue forUN peacekeeping forces in Southeast Asia reflects the UN’s appreciation of thenation’s commitment and the results it has recorded in UN peacekeepingparticipation.-VNA
