APEC 2017: anti-illegal logging group convenes session

– APEC’sExpert Group on Illegal Logging and Associated Trade (EGILAT) opened theirmeeting on February 20, as part of the first Senior Officials’ Meeting of APEC(SOM-1).

The session focused on finding measures toboost links within the Asia-Pacific in a bid to protect forest resources,prevent illegal logging and enhance capacity of APEC member economies in legaltimber trade.

Participants discussed ways to improveconnections between producers and consumers as well as between small-scaleforest growers and wood processing companies to ensure that only legal timberis allowed to be exported.

At the function, Nguyen Van Ha, deputy headof the Vietnam Administration of Forestry, said Vietnam is making effort to scaleup forest coverage nationwide, with the rate increasing to 40.84 percent in2015 from 33.2 percent in 2010.

APEC member economies account for 53percent of the global forest areas. They also make up 60 percent and 80 percentof the global timber production and value.

Founded in 2011, the EGILAT serves as aplatform for the economies to strengthen policy dialogue on combating illegallogging and associated trade, as well as promoting the trade of legallyharvested forest products.

The SOM-1 is underway in Nha Trang city,the south central coastal province of Khanh Hoa, from February 18 to March 3.-VNA

ꦑ Vietnam pioneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

꧙ Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.

Renowned artists including Ha Anh Tuan, Den Vau, and Phan Manh Quynh, along with many directors and attendees, took part in planting hundreds of rare tree species such as mun (Diospyros mun) and cho chi (Parashorea chinensis) in the Thung Bong area of the Cuc Phuong National Park, contributing to forest ecosystem restoration.
