ASEAN, ADB discuss essentials of goods and services statistics

The ASEAN Secretariat and Asian Development Bank (ADB) jointly organised a seminar on International Trade in Goods and Services Statistics in Manila, the Philippines from April 14 to 16.

Itwas intended to provide practical international guidance in addressingdata compilation issues involving multinational goods and servicestrading. The increasing globalisation of tradeand outsourcing has enabled widened interconnections within Asiancountries through cross-border economic transactions. Due toincreasingly globalised production, goods and services transactions havebecome more complicated.
The availability oftimely, comparable and relevant statistics on trade in goods, servicesand investments is crucial within the ASEAN to design policies,negotiate regional agreements and monitor the impact of integrationthrough the formation of the ASEAN Economic Community. Delegates from ten ASEAN member states and several Asian countries tothe seminar stressed the necessity of collaboration and coordinationamong national statistics agencies to facilitate effectiveimplementation of agreed-upon international standards on datacompilation.
A forum on the ASEAN ComprehensiveInvestment Agreement (ACIA) was also held in Jakarta, Indonesia betweenApril 15 and 16. Themed “TransformingInvestment in ASEAN through ACIA”, the forum focused the discussion onthe salient features of ACIA and its potential benefits to Indonesia andthe region. It also provided a platform for businesses from Indonesiaand third party countries to exchange experience in investing in theASEAN.-VNA
