A flag-hoisting ceremony was held in Hanoi on August 8 to mark the 56th founding anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations – ASEAN (August 8, 1967 - 2023) and 28 years of Vietnam’s membership of the association. Minister of Foreign Affairs Bui Thanh Son chaired the ceremony.

Twenty-eight years since officially joining ASEAN on July 28, 1995, Vietnam's membership has left a profound mark with her positive contributions to the bloc’s common development, laying the foundation for the establishment of a community with political unity, economic integration, and social responsibility sharing.
Throughout 28 years of membership, the economic-trade ties between Vietnam and ASEAN members have grown tremendously, both in scope and depth. In 2022, Vietnam-ASEAN trade reached a record high, exceeding 80 billion USD, compared with 6 billion USD in 1996 when it first joined the ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA).
The 44th General Assembly of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA-44) officially opened in Jakarta, Indonesia on August 7. Chairman of the National Assembly Vuong Dinh Hue led the Vietnamese delegation to attend the event.

The country is willing to participate in collective efforts to promote cooperation and mobilise resources to advance the current priority issues of developing countries, such as trade, investment, infrastructure connectivity, making the most of scientific and technological advances for development, and people-to-people exchanges, Hang said.
During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
The Chairman stressed the need for stricter fiscal discipline, faster digital transformation, and more efficient management of State budget revenues and expenditures.
