Ballet performed to mark 140 years of “Carmen” premiere

The ballet “Carmen” will be performed by artists of the Ho Chi Minh City Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) at the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House on March 29 to mark the 140th anniversary of the premiere of the “Carmen” opera.

The ballet will star theHBSO’s top talents, including Nguyen Thu Trang, Ho Phi Diep, Dam DucNhuan, Dao Van Thien and Tran Hoang Yen, who performed the play in 2012. When the opera “Carmen” premiered at theOpéra-Comique in France’s Paris in 1875, it received a lukewarm responsefrom the public, gaining popularity only after the opera was staged inVienna the same year and in London in 1878.
Theballet “Carmen”, which premiered in 1967, was crafted by Cubanchoreographer Alberto Alonso on music taken from the opera and writtenby Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin.
Of Frenchcomposer Georges Bizet’s 15 operas, “Carmen” is his most renowned andfinal work. He passed away suddenly at the age of 37, just three monthsafter the opera premiered. At the show on March 29,the audience will have a chance to enjoy excerpts from other famousBizet operas performed by Meritorious Artist Hong Vy, Pham Trang andTran Duy Linh. The orchestra will be conducted by prodigy Tran NhatMinh.-VNA
