Ca Mau consolidates dykes against erosion along western coast

Hanoi (VNA) – A working delegation of the Vietnam Disaster ManagementAuthority will be sent to the southernmost province of Ca Mau to help thelocality cope with erosion along the western part of its waters.
On August 3, the Southwest monsoon andrising tides caused serious erosion along the western dyke system in theprovince, especially in a 12.5km Ba Tinh-Kinh Moi section, and a 356m DaBac-Kinh Moi stretch.
The provincial People’s Committee hasdirected relevant agencies to take measures to consolidate dykes.
More than 200 people have been mobilised tostand ready around the clock to deal with any possible incidents.
According to the committee, 105km of coastin both the eastern and western parts face the risk of erosion.
The eastern coast loses 50-100 metres tothe sea and the western coast, 20-50 metres.
The phenomenon also causes Ca Mau to losevast areas of protective forests and take away job opportunities.
Le Minh Luan, who lives in the Bo DeEstuary in Tam Giang Dong commune of Nam Can district, said 20 years ago hisfamily was among those living in a hamlet some 200m from the sea. But the seaeroded the area in the last few years and all the households in the hamlet wereforced to evacuate.
The place was so badly affected that hisfamily in fact had to evacuate twice in the last three years.-VNA
The southern province of Ca Mau has been upgrading the sea dyke on its western coast to combat rising tides and landslides, which are affecting local people's livelihoods.
The People’s Committee of the Mekong Delta province of An Giang has declared a state of emergency due to land erosion along the Ong Chuong River in Cho Moi district.
The Mekong Delta will not have early or intense flooding in its upper parts this year because of the low water level in the Mekong River, according to the National Centre of Hydro-Meteorology Forecasting.
