Cabinet meeting focuses on removing difficulties for agriculture

According to a report by Minister of Planning andInvestment Bui Quang Vinh, macro-economy so far this year hasmaintained stable and on a right track.

Consumer priceindex in May rose 0.16 percent over the previous month and 0.2 percentover the same period last year, he noted, adding that during the month,total exports was estimated at nearly 63.2 billion USD, up 7.3 percentyear on year, while imports were 66.2 billion USD.

Thenumber of new start-up firms and their combined capital surged by 15.5and 26.3 percent, respectively. At the same time, the number ofenterprises resuming operation rose 5.9 percent.

Meanwhile, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phatreported that the prolonged drought in central and Central Highlandsregion as well as the stagnation in the export of a number ofagricultural products seriously affected the production and farmers’lives.

The ministry will push crop and animalrestructuring in drought-hit areas, while continuing to promote theapplication of advanced technology to raise production, quality andcompetitiveness of farm produces, the minister said.

Regarding measures to boost export of agricultural products, Minister ofIndustry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang said together with speeding upnegotiations for free trade agreements between Vietnam and partners,the ministry will work closely with other ministries to seek new marketfor farm produces, especially key products like rice, coffee, rubber,seafood and vegetable.

At the meeting, Minister ofCulture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Tuan Anh noted that the number offoreign visitors to Vietnam so far this year is lower than to otherregional countries. He suggested that the Government increase tourismpromotion activities.

Other Cabinet members agreed that itis crucial to make tourism as a spearhead sector of the economy. It isnecessary to remove administrative barriers to attract visitors, whileopening more direct air routes from Vietnam to promising markets,they said.

Concluding the meeting, Prime Minister NguyenTan Dung asked cabinet members to make more efforts to removedifficulties for agriculture, speeding up restructuring and boosting thesector’s sustainable growth.

He continued to stress theneed to ensure macro-economic stability, improve business environmentand enhance competitiveness of Vietnamese enterprises.

Hedirected the State Bank of Vietnam to better manage exchange rate,regulating interest rate to maintain macro-economy and support businessand production at the same time.

The PM urged the bank to keep a close eye at the real property market to make sure the sector grows healthily.

He also required Cabinet members to prepare reports to deliver at theNational Assembly’s 9th session, and take the initiative in providingaccurate information to National Assembly deputies and voters.-VNA
