Central steering committee urges continued actions in response to floods in central region

Hanoi (VNA) – The standing office of the centralsteering committee for ไnatural disaster prevention and control has demandedministries, sectors and localities continue to focus on dealing with serious flooding in the central region following the PrimeMinister’s October 8 dispatch.
The request was made in the face of complex developments of incessant rains and floods that have caused heavy human and property losses in the region.
As of 6pm of October 9, downpour-triggered floods had killedfive people (two in Quang Tri, one in Quang Ngai, Gia Lai and Dak Lak each) andinjured four (one in Quang Binh and three in Thua Thien-Hue) while eight hadgone missing, according to the standing office.
As many as 33,386 houses in the central region had beendamaged and landslides recorded at 93 sites on national highways and 2.2km ofprovincial roads. Many local roads have also been flooded, blocking the trafficflow.
Meanwhile, six cargo ships broke down and three others sankin Quang Tri province. One fishing boat also sank off the coast of Binh Dinhprovince as a result of downpours and floods.
Floods also inundated 52ha of rice and 1,957ha of crops,devastated 772ha of aquatic farming, and killed or washed away a large numberof livestock and poultry in the region.
By the end of October 9, floods had submerged twocommunes in Ha Tinh province, 28 others in Quang Binh, 68 in Quang Tri, 51 inThua Thien-Hue, and 12 communes and wards in Da Nang city.
To cope with floods, 26,407 people in Quang Binh, Quang Tri,Thua Thien-Hue, Da Nang and Quang Nam had been evacuated by 6pm of October 9./.
The central region is forecast to experience prolonged heavy rains and floods in the coming days due to a low-pressure system in the East Sea that may grow into a tropical depression.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has issued a dispatch requiring that ministries, sectors, and localities focus resources on dealing with floods and heavy rains that had left five dead and six missing in the central region as of the morning of October 8.
Economic losses caused by natural disasters in Vietnam this year to September 27 had amounted to 5 trillion VND (over 215 million USD), it was reported at a meeting held in the central province of Quang Binh on October 8.
With strong support from local authorities, businesses, organisations, and residents, the province has successfully built or repaired 10,707 homes for disadvantaged households, including war veterans, families of martyrs, ethnic minority people, and low-income residents.
