Ceremonies mark 710 years since King-Monk’s Nirvana attainment
A grand ceremony was held at Truc Lam Palace, part of the Yen Tu landscape relic site in Uong Bi city of northern Quang Ninh province, on December 7 to mark 710 years since the Nirvana attainment of King-Monk Tran Nhan Tong.

Quang Ninh (VNA) – A grand ceremony was held atTruc Lam Palace, part of the Yen Tu landscape relic site in Uong Bi city ofnorthern Quang Ninh province, on December 7 to mark 710 years since the Nirvanaattainment of King-Monk Tran Nhan Tong.
Tran Nhan Tong (1258-1308), born Tran Kham, wasthe third king of the Tran Dynasty. He ascended to the throne when he was 21.He was famed for defeating Yuan-Mongol invaders twice as well as developing thenational economy and culture during his 15-year reign.
The king abdicated when he was 35 and spent therest of his life on Yen Tu Mountain, located in what is now Quang Ninhprovince, practicing and propagating Buddhism. He founded the Truc Lam sect of ZenBuddhism here.
At the commemoration, held by the VietnamBuddhist Sangha Central Committee, officials and thousands of Buddhist monks,nuns, and followers reviewed the career of and honoured the great merit of TranNhan Tong.
In his speech, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Damsaid the ceremony was an occasion to express respect and admiration for thegenius and clear-sighted king, whose ideological values will continue to beupheld in the new era and remain an inspiration for patriotism.
The same day, a similar event took place at VietNam Quoc Tu Pagoda in Ho Chi Minh City to celebrate the 710th anniversary ofTran Nhan Tong’s Nirvana attainment.
To pay tribute to the King-Monk, the Vietnam BuddhistSangha Central Committee also organised a number of activities in manylocalities nationwide. –VNA
The Yen Tu festival in the northern province of Quang Ninh is one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, attracting thousands of pilgrims and visitors nationwide.
The Yen Tu Spring Festival is taking place in the northern province of Quang Ninh. The festival is part of the National Tourism Year activities hosted by the locality.
Various ceremonial activities will take place in the northern province of Quang Ninh on December 6 and 7 to commemorate the 710th anniversary of the death of King–Monk Tran Nhan Tong, the founder of Vietnam Zen Buddhism.
An international conference was held in northern Quang Ninh province on December 6 to look into the cultural and philosophical uniqueness of King-Monk Tran Nhan Tong and the Truc Lam Buddhist sect which he himself founded.
The ambassador noted that among the 300,000 Vietnamese residing in the RoK, around 3,000 are living in Pyeongtaek and contributing actively to the local economy. Ho expressed his hope that the local authorities will continue support the overseas Vietnamese community in the city.
This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention that a country has served two consecutive terms on the Committee. The outcome shows the trust and recognition that member states have given Vietnam for its efforts and achievements in carrying out and promoting the Convention, as well as for its active role, strong standing, and growing credibility at UNESCO.
