Construction starts on Norway-funded waste treatment plant

The Mekong Delta province of Soc Trang on February 26 started the construction of a solid waste treatment plant partially funded by the Norwegian Government.

Of the total 216 billion VND (over 10million USD) investment, 82 percent is sourced from the Norwegianofficial development assistance.

The plant is located in Phu My and Dai Tam communes and will cover 27.37 hectares.

It is designed to sort 160 tonnes of residential waste, recycle 5tonnes of industrial plastic waste, and produce 100 tonnes of organicfertiliser every day.

Lam Huu Tung, Director of the Soc TrangPublic Urban Work Company - the project’s investor - said that whenoperational in August 2015, the plant will replace outdoor dumpinggrounds, thus reducing environmental pollution and creating jobs forlocals.-VNA

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment effortsꦜ

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
