Course improves rhino horn awareness

A training course to raise awareness of women and business people ofthe threat to rhino’s existence posed by the demand for the animal’shorn has been held recently in Hanoi.

Organised by theConvention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Faunaand Flora (CITES) management agency in Vietnam, the municipal Women’sUnion and the Business and Integration Magazine, the event saw theparticipation of more than 500 women’s union activists andrepresentatives from over 50 businesses in the city.

Participantswere provided with information on the situation of rhino population inVietnam and legal regulations related to the animal.

Like in many other countries in Asia, Vietnamese traditionally believethat rhino horn can treat a range of diseases, including cancer, hencethe demand for the horn.

However, scientific studies showthat the rhino horn has no medical properties because it is composed ofmainly keratine substance, which is similar to human nail’s composition.

According to the Wildlife Department under the Humane SocietyInternational, since the beginning of 2013, at least 746 rhinos havebeen killed for their horns in South Africa, which has the highestconcentration of rhinos in the world. Many of the horns were smuggled toAsia, including Vietnam.

The lastrhino in Vietnam was killed in 2010, which is a tragic lesson inprotecting wild species on the verge of extinction.-VNA

Vietnam pi🐭oneers use of AI and remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, treatment🐻 efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.

Renowned artists including Ha Anh Tuan, Den Vau, and Phan Manh Quynh, along with many directors and attendees, took part in planting hundreds of rare tree species such as mun (Diospyros mun) and cho chi (Parashorea chinensis) in the Thung Bong area of the Cuc Phuong National Park, contributing to forest ecosystem restoration.
