Da Nang marks World Ocean Day

Da Nang (VNA) – The central city of Da Nang onJune 2 held a meeting in Son Tra district to celebrate the World Ocean Day(June 8) and the Vietnam Sea and Island Week.

Addressing the event, Vice Chairman of the city’sPeople’s Committee Nguyen Ngoc Tuan said making a living from the sea is aright direction. However, the protection of marine and coastal resources hasbecome more urgent with a number of serious challenges, such as the over-exploitation and degradation of coastal and aquatic resources, threats tobiodiversity and marine ecosystem and pollution.

This year’s World Ocean Day calls for better awarenessof people’s responsibility to keep the ocean clean and encourage the initiationof solutions to tackle plastic pollution for a healthier ocean and a betterfuture.

In response to the World Ocean Day and the Vietnam Seaand Island Week, the central city has launched a series of clean-up events, forexample, cleaning up Tho Quang fishing port, streets and pavements, conductingan oil spill response drill at Lien Chieu Port, and seminars to educate peopleon the sea and promote the Law of the Sea.

Da Nang City is blessed with about 90 km of coastlineand 11 public beaches. It aims to make the sea-based industry a backbone of thelocal economy by 2030 with tourist arrivals set to increase 13 – 14 percentfrom 2016 – 2025 and the cargo volume through local ports reaching 12 – 13million tonnes per year by 2025.-VNA

Vietnam pioneers use of AI a🐈nd remote sensing to monitor seawater quality

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

Vietnam ramps upꦐ plastic waste recycling, reuse♒, treatment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
