Deputy PM asks for prompt preparations for Long Thanh airport project

Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has asked for the feasibility report on the Long Thanh International Airport project to be completed and submitted soon so that it can be considered by the National Assembly in late 2019, ensuring that the construction of the project starts in 2020 as scheduled.

Hanoi (VNA) – Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung has asked for thefeasibility report on the Long Thanh International Airport project to becompleted and submitted soon so that it can be considered by the NationalAssembly in late 2019, ensuring that the construction of the project starts in2020 as scheduled.

The DeputyPM addressed a meeting in Hanoi on February 12 on the results of the feasibilitystudy for the first phase project,which was jointly carried out by theAirports Corporation of Vietnam and a joint venture comprising of firms fromJapan, France and Vietnam (JFV) from June 2018.

On June 2,2018, the JFV signed a contract with Heerim Architects and Planners on thedesigning of the airport’s terminals.

Accordingto the consultation agency, detailed designs of the project will largely be completedby April 2019. Connectivity methods and investment plans were also proposed.

Deputy PMDung recognised the efforts of the Ministry of Transport and relevant agencies,as well as the People’s Committee of Dong Nai in ground clearance and theproject’s implementation.

He stressedthe need to build the airport to the highest standards so as to ease theoverloading of Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, turningLong Thanh into an international and regional aviation transit centre.

He askedfor the careful calculation of transport demands and the division ofexploitation among airports in the country and region, thus optimising theefficiency of the project.

The airportshould apply modern technology and ensure safety, convenience, quality,efficiency, defence, security, and environmental protection criteria, he said.

The DeputyPM also suggested the mobilisation of capital for the project from private businesses,minimising the use of State budget.

The Long Thanh International Airport has a total areaof more than 5,580 ha, spreading across six communes in Long Thanh District,the southern province of Dong Nai. It is set to have a total investment of336.63 trillion VND (14.8 billion USD), with construction divided into threephases.

In the first phase, a runway and a passengerterminal, along with other supporting works, will be built to serve some 25million passengers and 1.2 million tonnes of cargo each year. This phase ishoped to be finished by 2025.

In the second phase, an additional runway andpassenger terminal will be constructed to serve 50 million passengers and 1.5million tonnes of cargo per year.

After the third phase, theairport will be able serve 100 million passengers and 5 million tonnes of cargoannually. –VNA
