Disaster-proof houses built for poor people in Mekong Delta
The first five houses under a programme on building disaster-proof houses for people in flood-prone areas were handed over to families in the Mekong Delta provinces of Ben Tre and Ca Mau on May 15 and 16.

Ca Mau (VNA) – Thefirst five houses under a programme on building disaster-proof houses for peoplein flood-prone areas were handed over to families in the Mekong Delta provincesof Ben Tre and Ca Mau on May 15 and 16.
Among the beneficiary families, two are in ThanhPhu district of Ben Tre province and three others are in U Minh district of CaMau province.
A representative of the Ba Ria-Vung Tau UrbanSewerage and Development Co. Ltd (Busadco), the house constructor, said eachdisaster-proof house costs 50 million VND (2,200 USD) and is prefabricated withnon-metal, heat resistant, soundproof and waterproof materials.
Each house is completed in four days at themaximum but still has its safety and quality ensured, Busadco said, noting thatthe remaining 35 houses in the programme will be handed over to residents in CaMau and Ben Tre provinces by the end of June.
Total construction cost is about 2 billion VND(87,900 USD) funded by Tan Dai Hung Plastic Joint Stock Company.
Doan Thi Tuyet Nga, Director of the Departmentfor Science-Technology and International Cooperation under the GeneralDepartment of Disaster Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Agricultureand Rural Development, highly valued the businesses’ sponsorship and hoped thatthey will continue their support in the time ahead.
She noted that residents in disaster-prone areashave encountered an array of difficulties, and unqualified houses have alsomade them face high risks posed by worsening climate change.
The programme on building disaster-proof housesis practical and humanitarian assistance for people in Ben Tre and Ca Mau, twoprovinces that are susceptible to natural disasters, she added.-VNA
