A conference took place in Hanoi on April 13 to review the support programme in response to climate change.

Hanoi (VNA) – A conference tookplace in Hanoi on April 13 to review the support programme in response to climatechange.

The event was co-hosted by the Ministry ofNatural Resources and Environment’s Department of Climate Change and theMinistry of Planning and Investment’s Department of Science, Education, NaturalResources and Environment.

Speaking at the event, head of theDepartment of Climate Change Tang The Cuong said Vietnam has actively realised commitmentsmentioned at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the UN FrameworkConvention on Climate Change (COP-21).

He said Vietnam’s major policies in 2019,which should be added to a policy framework to submit to the Prime Minister inJune 2018, will contribute to refining mechanisms towards the full implementationof the Paris Agreement to be valid in the country from 2021.

Deputy head of the Department of ClimateChange Pham Van Tan said eight goals of the support programme in response toclimate change include response to natural disasters, climate monitor, ensuringwater and food security amidst climate change, response to rising seawaterlevel and disaster risks in vulnerable areas, sustainable forest management anddevelopment, emission reduction, response capacity improvement, and diversifyingfinancial resources and improving investment efficiency.

WB environment expert Stephen Ling lauded theVietnamese government for basically achieving goals set in 2016 and 2017 andvowed to assist Vietnam in devising the policy framework in the near future.

Over the past decade, the programme hasmade great contributions to climate change response in Vietnam. Each year,development partners together with ministries and agencies meet to discussframework policies approved by the Prime Minister and agreed on prioritypolicies in the coming years.-VNA

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

Vietnam ramps up plastic waste recycling, reuse, trea🐼tment efforts

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.

Hundreds of ඣtrees planted in Cuc Phuong National Park as part of Forestival

Renowned artists including Ha Anh Tuan, Den Vau, and Phan Manh Quynh, along with many directors and attendees, took part in planting hundreds of rare tree species such as mun (Diospyros mun) and cho chi (Parashorea chinensis) in the Thung Bong area of the Cuc Phuong National Park, contributing to forest ecosystem restoration.
