HCM City (VNA) - Local authorities in the MekongDelta province of Dong Thap will ban fishing in the breeding season from May toJune to protect aquatic resources in the locality.

“DongThap has tangled canal systems with plenty of natural food, so fish can growand develop faster there than in other places,” Nguyen Van Tung added.
A report from the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Developmentsaid that illegal fishing using explosives and electrical shocks is still goingon.
In addition, the aquatic ecosystem and natural breeding grounds are affectedby boats engaging in illegal activities on the water.
The boats are also causing pollution.

Dong Thap province, already the largest tra fish producer in the Mekong Delta, has further increased the breeding area this year because of the high prices the fish is fetching.
The seafood companies should work closer with various ministries such as trade and industry and foreign affairs to overcome trade barriers that hinder Vietnamese seafood exports, a top agriculture official said.
