Draft national border protection strategy tabled for discussion
The Defence Ministry held a conference in Hanoi on July 24 to collect opinions of defence officials, military officers and experts on a draft of the national border protection strategy.

Hanoi (VNA)𒐪 – The Defence Ministry held aconference in Hanoi on July 24 to collect opinions of defence officials,military officers and experts on a draft of the national border protectionstrategy.
In opening the conference, Politburo member and DefenceMinister General Ngo Xuan Lich stressed that the national border protectionstrategy aims to put in concrete terms the resolution on nationaldefence-security missions adopted at the 8th plenum of the 11th Party Central Committee. He said the strategy aims to combine the experience ofgenerations of Vietnamese in defending the country’s border and that of othernations in the world. The national border protection strategy defines the goals, viewpoints,principles, guidelines on the work, along with the methods and policies tosuccessfully implement the strategy. Participants contributed their opinions to clarify theprinciples and guidelines for national border protection. They stressed severalmajor measures to implement the strategy, one of which is to strengthen theParty’s leadership and improve the efficiency of State management over thebuilding, control and protection of the national border. National consensus and concerted actions of the entire politicalsystem are also necessary to ensure the effective protection of the nationalborder, as are a strong political base at grassroots level and social-economic developmentin border areas. Participants also expressed approval of other measuresspecified in the draft strategy, including the building of people-based border defencewith the people’s armed forces as the core and the border guard as the specialisedforce. They underlined the need to enhance internationalcooperation in the work, especially defence and border diplomacy. Research should be conducted to perfect the mode and plans tomanage border protection work, along with mechanisms, policies and laws on thebuilding, management and protection of the national border. General Ngo Xuan Lich said the strategy drafting board willstudy the opinions raised at the conference and incorporate useful contentsinto the draft national border protection strategy to submit to the Politburofor consideration.-VNA
The Border Guard Command of Vietnam’s northern Lao Cai province and Honghe county border police of China’s Yunnan province have agreed to set up a liaison officer mechanism and hotline between their equivalent units.
Vietnam has made efforts to address unsolved problems on border, territory, sea and islands over the years, ensuring the country’s sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction, said Deputy Foreign Minister and Chairman of the National Boundary Commission Le Hoai Trung.

The country is willing to participate in collective efforts to promote cooperation and mobilise resources to advance the current priority issues of developing countries, such as trade, investment, infrastructure connectivity, making the most of scientific and technological advances for development, and people-to-people exchanges, Hang said.
During the negotiations, the US highly evaluated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts, affirmed its appreciation for the bilateral relationship, acknowledged Vietnam’s proposals and concerns, and considered these an important basis for continuing discussions and moving towards a final agreement.
The Chairman stressed the need for stricter fiscal discipline, faster digital transformation, and more efficient management of State budget revenues and expenditures.
