Entertainment activities to be suspended during upcoming national mourning
The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has sent a dispatch to heads of ministries, sectors as well as central agencies, organisations, provinces and centrally-run cities on the suspension of entertainment activities during the two-day national mourning for former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Le Kha Phieu on August 14-15.

Hanoi (VNA) – The Ministry ofCulture, Sports and Tourism has sent a dispatch to heads of ministries, sectorsas well as central agencies, organisations, provinces and centrally-run citieson the suspension of entertainment activities during the two-day nationalmourning for former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam CentralCꦆommittee Le Kha Phieu on August 14-15.
State agencies across the country as wellas representative offices of Vietnam abroad are asked to fly national flags athaft-mast in the two days. Delegations can pay homage to the formerleader at National Funeral Hall, No. 5 Tran Thanh Tong Street, Hanoi, where heis laid in state, Thong Nhat Hall in Ho Chi Minh City and 25B Hall in Thanh Hoacity of the north-central province of the same name. They are asked not to bring wreaths to thefuneral. The ministry also requested otherministries, sectors as well as central agencies, organisations and Stateagencies, People’s Committees of provinces and centrally-run cities to directand guide organisations, individuals and entertainment facilities to suspendcelebrative events, art programmes, sport competitions and entertainmentactivities on August 14-15. The former leader passed away at 2:52 onAugust 7, of serious illness and old age at his home, and his funeral will beheld as a national mourning. He was born on December 27, 1931, in DongKhe commune, Dong Son district, Thanh Hoa province. As the top leader of the Party fromDecember 1997 to April 2001, he and the Party Central Committee, PoliticalBureau and Secretariat led the whole Party, people and army to gain remarkableachievements in the national reform, industrialisation, modernisation,construction and defence./.
The Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee, the National Assembly, the President, the Government and the Vietnam Fatherland Front Central Committee have issued a special communiqué, announcing that former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu passed away at 2:52 on August 7, and his funeral will be held as a national mourning.
Comrade Le Kha Phieu was the General Secretary of the Party Central Committee from December 1997 to April 2001. Under his leadership, the Vietnamese people, the army, and the Communist Party made great strides in the country’s renewal, industrialisation, modernisation, national construction and defence.
Former Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu, who passed away on August 7 at the age of 89, was a committed leader who held many positions and greatly contributed to Vietnam’s revolution and lofty international missions.
The Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK) and top leaders of the Republic of Korea (RoK), the Republic of Nicaragua and political parties sent messages of condolences to Vietnamese Party and State leaders, people and family of former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) Central Committee Le Kha Phieu over his passing.
This is the first time since the adoption of the Convention that a country has served two consecutive terms on the Committee. The outcome shows the trust and recognition that member states have given Vietnam for its efforts and achievements in carrying out and promoting the Convention, as well as for its active role, strong standing, and growing credibility at UNESCO.
