First Biennial Update Report on climate change introduced

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment introduced the first Biennial Update Reports (BUR1) of Vietnam to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) at a workshop in Hanoi on January 23.

Nguyen Van Tue, Director of theministry’s Department of Meteorology, Hydrology and Climate Change, saidVietnam has actively implemented the Nationally AppropriateMitigation Actions (NAMA) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in thecountry.

The completion of the report, which wasbuilt by the ministry – a permanent agency of the National Committee onClimate Change and other relevant ministries and sectors and sent to theUNFCCC inter-governmental organisation in December 2014, demonstratesVietnam’s commitments to implementing priority climate change responseprogrammes.

BUR1 includes four chapters featuringthe national geography, climate change scenario, water resources andenvironment; the 2010 national greenhouse gases inventory report; GHGmitigation actions; and financial and technical demands, capacityenhancement, and aids for climate change activities.

According to the report, in 2010, the total greenhouse gas emission(GHG) in Vietnam was 266 million tonnes of CO2, excluding land use,land-use change and forestry (LULUCF). The energy sector reported thehighest GHG emission, accounting for 53.3 percent of the total, followedby agriculture and industry, 33.2 percent and 7.97 percentrespectively.-VNA

According to Dr. Vu Anh Tuan, Deputy Director General of the Vietnam Space Centre and head of the project, this is the first study in Vietnam to simultaneously employ Sentinel-2 satellite data, advanced machine learning algorithms, and the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud computing platform to model and monitor key seawater quality parameters.

In 2019, Quang Ninh became one of the first localities in Vietnam to launch a province-wide campaign against plastic waste, mobilising the participation of the political system, the business sector, and the general public. Other localities—such as Hai Phong, Da Nang, Binh Duong, and Ho Chi Minh City—have also effectively implemented waste-sorting initiatives at source, along with models for plastic-free markets and urban areas.
