First Saraswati goddess statue found in Vietnam on display
A sandstone statue of the Hindu goddess Saraswati, the first of its kind found in Vietnam, is being showcased at the museum of the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long.
Vinh Long (VNA) – A sandstone statue of the Hindugoddess Saraswati, the first of its kind found in Vietnam, is being showcasedat the museum of the Mekong Delta province of Vinh Long.
The statue, with the right hand and part of thepedestal broken, is 140cm high and dates back to about the 6th – 7th century.

It was discovered by a resident in Hoa Thanhcommune of Tam Binh district while mining sand on the Co Chien River inNovember 2016. Later, this resident donated the statue to Phuoc An Pagoda inXuan Hiep commune of Tra On district.
In March 2017, staff of the Vinh Long Museumcame to Phuoc An Pagoda to learn about this statue, which was then handed overto the museum for preservation.
Deputy Director of the Vinh Long Department ofCulture, Sports and Tourim Le Thanh Hien said on November 14 the antiquity is aparticularly rare object that will help with research into local history, especiallythe appearance of Indian culture and religion in Vietnam.
It is also valuable to archeological, cultural, religious,aesthetic and craft technique research, Hien added.

The relic complex of Bo Luy-Kompong Thmo pagoda, also known as Lo Gach (Brick-kiln) pagoda, in Chau Thanh district of the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh, has been recognised as a national archaeological site.
Archaeologists unveiled new findings in the recent excavation of Phong Le relic site dating back to the Champa era (from the 2nd century until 1832) in Hoa Tho Dong ward of Cam Le district, in the central city of Da Nang, on August 21.
Archeologists delivered 356 reports on the new archeological findings around Vietnam at an announcement event held for the sector during the weekend in the city of Hue.
