German county appreciates Vietnamese expats’ contributions
A large Vietnamese expat community in Germany’s Lichtenberg borough contributed significantly to local economic growth, Mayor Birgit Monteiro said in a meeting with the Vietnamese Ambassador.

Berlin (VNA) – A large Vietnamese expat community in Germany’s Lichtenberg borough contributed significantly to local economic growth, Mayor Birgit Monteiro said in a meeting with Vietnamese Ambassador Doan Xไuan Hung.
The Dong Xuan shopping mall and outstanding academic performance of Vietnamese German students at Barnim High School are two examples of the communities’ successful integration, she noted.
The mayor stressed Vietnam’s cooperation potential, saying her district wants to boost ties with Vietnamese localities moving forward.
Ambassador Hung expressed his hope for further support from Lichtenberg authorities toward his fellow countrymen here.
He lauded cooperation between Lichtenberg and Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem district in health care, cultural exchange, education and environment.
The Vietnam Embassy in Germany is willing to do its utmost to assist the two localities with join projects in the near future, Hung said.
The sides also discussed the realisation of the pact.
Lichtenberg is home to 4,000 Vietnamese expatriates. The country is home to a total of 20,000 Vietnamese.-VNA
Hoan Kiem district of Hanoi and Lichtenberg of Berlin signed a document on preparations for the two localities to become sister towns in Berlin on Nov. 17.
The Association of Vietnamese in Berlin-Brandenburg (Germany) and the Cultural Association in Berlin’s Lichtenberg district organised a celebration to welcome the traditional Lunar New Year (Tet) Festival on February 8.
