Hanoi calls for German investments in drainage, wastewater treatment

Hanoi (VNA) – Vice Chairman of theHanoi People’s Committee Nguyen The Hung called on German investors to join thecapital city’s projects on drainage, wastewater treatment and improvement of thelocal environment at a forum on March 19.
The Vietnam – Germany water sector forum inHanoi saw German businesses learn about Hanoi’s demand for investment andintroduce modern technologies suitable to the capital’s conditions.
Speaking at the forum, German Ambassador toVietnam Christian Berger said his country once faced river and lake pollutionlike Vietnam.
To deal with the problem, it applied aseries of measures, including wastewater discharge fee, water usestandardisation and water source protection, he said, noting that to date, 82percent of surveyed Germans are pleased with local tap water quality.
The diplomat stated Germany, housinghundreds of companies operating in wastewater management and treatment, iswilling to support Hanoi and Vietnam in technology investment for environmentalprotection, wastewater treatment and clean water sources building.
He hoped the forum would connect Vietnameseand German businesses and help them learn about their markets’ demand forfuture investment and partnerships.
Hanoi has huge demand for clean water. Thecity is estimated to need some 2 million cubic metres (m3) of clean water perday by 2020, about 3 million and 3.5 million m3 per day by 2030 and 2050,respectively. It is striving to provide clean water for 100 percent of itsrural population by 2020.-VNA
