HCM City (VNA) – The 2024 International Container Management Symposium (CMS 2024) is underway in Ho Chi Minh City, gathering over 50 leading global experts in packaging management and pesticide regulatory agencies from Southeast Asian countries.
Running from September 4-6, the event is co-hosted by CropLife International (CIL), the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s Plant Protection Department and the European Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam (EuroCham). The focus is on effective management and communication mechanisms for the collection and disposal of pesticide packaging in different countries, contributing to realising green and circular agricultural development strategies.
Huynh Tan Dat, Director of the Plant Protection Department, noted that Vietnam annually uses nearly 100,000 tonnes of pesticides, with 50-60% used directly, 20-30% for preservation and market circulation, and about 10% for export.
While essential for crop protection, pesticides can pose risks, such as residues in agricultural products and improper packaging disposal. Addressing these issues is key to sustainable agriculture, product quality, and environmental protection, he said.
Nguyen Van Son, Chairman of the Vietnam Pesticide Producers and Traders Association (VIPA), suggested municipal and provincial departments of natural resources and environment proactively advise local authorities to allocate funds for the collection and disposal of used pesticide packaging, while promoting the role of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) mechanism. He highlighted the need for increased inspections and strict legal actions against violations.
🌜 Dang Van Bao, Chairman of CropLife Vietnam, said the company has worked closely with the department and various partners in recent years to launch pilot models for safe and effective pesticide use in key agricultural production areas. CropLife members make contributions to the EPR fund, aiming to establish long-term financial mechanisms that will facilitate the systematic collection and disposal of pesticide packaging and other agricultural waste in the long term./.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has recently issued a decision to remove plant protection products containing chlorpyrifos-ethyl and fipronil from the list of those allowed for use in Vietnam.
